Commissioning Persian Calligraphy: Styles, Pricing & Process

If you have a Persian poem or phrase that you would like to bring to life, we can create a custom calligraphy artwork either in your choice of Nastaʿlīq or Siyah Mashq (the abstract, expressive form) to add depth and beauty to your artistic collection. The art commission includes your choice of either Nastaʿlīq or Siyah-Mashq calligraphy, with example photographs of each style provided below.

Nastaʿlīq features a classical and grammatically structured line, celebrated for its clarity, elegance, and refined simplicity.
Each piece (A4 paper dimensions, 21 x 29.7 centimeters, 8.27 x 11.69 inches) begins at $600, with final pricing depending on the complexity of the composition, passe-partouts design, and any requested illumination or embellishment.
Siyah-Mashq, an abstract and more expressive style, typically starts at $850 and may vary based on the intricacy of design, custom passe-partouts, and any additional enhancements.

Our commissioned artworks unite two of the most cherished traditions in Persian art: calligraphy and illumination (Tazhib). Through a deeply collaborative process, SaBa, the calligrapher, and Narvan, the master of illumination, merge their distinct crafts into a single, harmonious masterpiece. SaBa sets the foundation with expressive flowing script, while Narvan enhances the piece with intricate geometric patterns, elegant floral motifs, and finely detailed miniature elements. Together, they transform the written word into a visual composition tailored to reflect your unique taste and vision.

How to Place Your Art Commission

To initiate your art commission, please follow the steps outlined below.

Share your favorite text with us, whether it's a phrase, a line of poetry, or a meaningful verse. If you'd like help finding the perfect phrase, we're happy to guide you and offer a curated selection of verses that align with your taste and vision.
Select your preferred calligraphy style, Nastaʿlīq or Siyah Mashq. Refer to the images for a visual representation of each technique.
Fill out the commission sheet and email it to saba@sabapersiancalligraphy.com to begin your custom artwork.
The quoted price includes your commissioned artwork created on 100% cotton fine art paper for small and medium sizes and on premium canvas for larger formats.
The final pricing is determined based on several factors, including the complexity of the composition, preferred size, passe-partout design, the intricacy of the illumination (Tazhib), and a custom-crafted frame tailored specifically for your artwork.

Delivery Times Policy

Limited Editions: Standard delivery time is approximately 14 days. Each reproduction is made to order, hand-signed and undergoes quality control and careful packaging to ensure exceptional presentation and protection.

Collector’s Editions & Select Artworks: Delivery may take 30 to 45 days, especially for pieces requiring pass-partout designs and custom framing.

Original Artwork Commissions: Custom commissions typically require 2 to 3 months for completion and delivery, depending on the complexity of the piece.

Terms and Conditions

All commissions require approval from either SaBa or Narvan.
Each artist will create independently, expressing their unique style and vision.
All SaBa commission sales are final. No refunds will be issued for any reason unless the artist declines or is unable to fulfill the commission.
SaBa Persian Calligraphy reserves the exclusive right to use images and print reproductions of all commissioned artworks for promotional, portfolio, exhibition, or any other purposes in both digital and physical formats without the need for additional compensation to the client.
SaBa reserves the right to respectfully decline any art commission at any time and for any reason.
